Paul Nahmais was shocked when is 25-year-old son Gabe went to sleep in his childhood bed and never woke up. It happened in September of 2014, and Paul spoke with WMC Action News 5 in hopes of helping other Memphis parents understand the threat of heroin addiction to local teenagers and young adults. He said that Gabe's exploration with drugs started in middle school, but his addiction didn't get out of hand until a friend introduced him to heroin in high school.
What makes Gabe's story tragic is the fact that his overdose occurred as a result of relapse. He had successfully completed rehab and was taking recovery one day at a time when he succumbed to cravings and took the speedball that ended his life. Experts told Action 5 News that heroin can continue to impact brain processing years after active use is stopped, so the risk of relapse is high for those not working closely with rehabilitation and recovery specialists.

Knowing When to Travel for Treatment
If you or a loved one is searching for a drug and alcohol rehab center in Memphis, one of the key decisions you will need to make is where you want to go to rehab geographically. In other words, do you want to stay in your hometown or travel for treatment?
Many of the treatment programs that can be found in other cities offer amenities that you may not find in your home area. For example, some hotel-like features that are more high-end are often in bigger facilities in rural areas. With a holistic approach to recovery, these facilities have yoga classes, specialty meal options, comfortable living arrangements and more. They cater to those who value and are able to pay for such amenities. For those who are looking for more affordable options, outpatient rehabs or those located within city limits may make more sense.
